Reported Synergies: Detailed Analysis

Core Subjective Synergy Reports

Jorkest (the original experimenter) repeatedly describes a felt compatibility:

"caapi and iboga seem like old friends"

"every time i take caapi now it reminds me of iboga..and whenever i take iboga it reminds me of caapi"

"i feel a real synergy between the two..if used in small doses i feel its completely safe"

Bancopuma offers the phenomenological comparison you flagged:

"for me a flood dose does in some ways resemble a very large dose of caapi alone. In fact, my last ayahuasca experience was one of my most powerful, and at the peak, it felt like I was back in the Iboga trance! I was amazed at the similarities, and I got the distinct impression that this was the caapi's touch."

He concludes: "I think as long as one treads carefully, these actually might be quite compatible medicines."

Calaquendi describes the combination as creating a blended state:

"the mix seemed to really 'feed' off each other, so it was like, 'am I on ayahuasca here, or iboga?'"

"Very tactile and full of body sensations, the vine helped me relax quite a bit"

"the telepathic qualities of the vine went hand in hand with the typical introspection I get on iboga"

He also notes a friend "does at least twice that dose of vine with about the same amount of total alkaloid iboga, he swears by it."

Caapi Enhancement vs. DMT Reduction

Polytrip's "ibogahuasca" experiment (1.5g 50:1 caapi extract + 50g chacruna + 0.4g iboga bark) yielded a nuanced finding:

"The effects of the ayahuasca was greatly altered by the iboga and the effects of caapi where definately greatly enhanced, but the effects of the DMT where strongly diminished."

"I felt very strongly as if something was vibrating on a different frequency than the DMT in the ayahuasca, and just more or less cancelling out some of the effects of the DMT."

"The visuals where absolutely less fine, sharp and colourfull than i normally have with chacruna. They where more raw."

"The effects of the chacruna where greatly altered and became much more physical. In fact the physical sensation was very simmilar to that of a high dose of mescaline. There was that constant feeling as if my body was 'slipping away'"

His conclusion: "I now see that taking ayahuasca with iboga was on itself a very good idea, but taking a DMT-plant with it made no sense at all."

And: "It just doesn't go well with DMT. But it has a very positive synergy with caapi at this dose."

He expresses surprise at Bancopuma's mushroom report: "I find it strange to read that you feel that mushrooms where potentiated by iboga, since mushrooms are so simmilar to DMT."

Traditional/Ethnobotanical Connections

Polytrip points to existing traditional practice:

"traditionally, ayawasquero's sometimes use a plant called shiric sanango as an admixture in their brews and that plant contains ibogain"

Calaquendi echoes this:

"Don't some of the South American (ayahuasca) add mixtures contain ibogoids? Sanango?"

rOm describes Bwiti practice:

"Bwiti people after initiation use iboga in such low doses as a stimulant... She is a dancer and said that she was using low doses to stimulate her mentally and physically"

Accumulation and Duration Effects

rOm observes:

"there is chance that Iboga is accumalating in the system. Taking it daily with Caapi is quite unheard of."

Polytrip contextualizes:

"Many people who're using it to get of from some subtsance they're addicted to, use it daily in small amounts instead of one large amount during one session. It does seem to build up, but if you stay beneath a certain dose, then levels of ibogaine or noribogaine will not accumulate to above a certain point. People who use it this way, all report visual phenomena like jorkest describes, but even after more then a month of daily use, it stays on that level."

Jorkest describes persistent effects:

"i think i took yesterday off..and also today..and im still feeling the effects...i still have the visual effects..what it looks like is light ripples coming off the edges of everything"

"and this is two or three days after my last iboga dose"

Bancopuma cites the mechanism:

"Ibogaine is converted to norIbogaine, which hangs around in body tissues for weeks or months, exerting an antidepressant and anti-addictive effect, and Ibogaine also increases levels of Glial cell-lined derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) in the long term"

Dream Enhancement

Jorkest repeatedly emphasizes oneirogenic effects:

"my dreams have been absolutely stunning..they are sooooo realistic and i can remember most of it when i wake up"

"the last two nights i have realized i am dreaming while dreaming"

"so far i would have to say the iboga and caapi combo has opened up my dreams more than anything"

Bancopuma suggests potential synergy with another African oneirogen:

"I know of someone who did report a synergy between the two plants [iboga and Silene capensis], and being that both plants are oneirogens, but I suspect through very different chemical pathways, there may well be an interesting synergy."

Dose-Response Observations

rOm found iboga alone insufficient at low doses:

"On iboga only in few 100 mg range I woulndn't feel anything. Then I increase the doses and mix it it with oral harmalas from rue seeds. Up to 150 mg harmalas and 2 grams of Iboga powdered and capped. This was definitely an awesome journey, pharmahuasca like in its intensity but different."

"A lot more energy, even restlessness for a good 10 hours and loads of visualisation of body energy flow"

He also mentions: "felt quite aphrodisiac"

Jorkest found striking nonlinearity when escalating:

"going from 200mg to 500mg to one gram..there is no comparison..1g was way way way more powerful than 500mg"

Calaquendi provides dosing context:

"Most wood is around 4-6% active alks... 10 grams of bark at 5% (AVERAGE) would equal 500mg of pure alkaloids, but within that spectrum somewhere between 50-70% is ibogaine, the rest are the aforementioned analogues - some of which are by weight more powerful that ibogaine itself."

"I'd recommend eating between 2 to 4 grams of rootbark with a mild dose of caapi. This should put you in the 200mg range of ibogamines."

General Psychological/Therapeutic Effects

Acolon_5 describes profound clarity:

"The motivation, the energy, the alterness....and while I realize that these will be fleeting when I stop taking iboga, it is certainly a tool that can be used to sort out ones life."

"low dose Iboga brings a grounding and an AMAZING CLARITY that I can only remember from my childhood"

Polytrip speculates on broad anti-addiction effects:

"People struggling with addictions say that they gradually become aware of the fact that they no longer need a certain substance and this can include all kinds of stuff people get addicted to. Some people start using it to combat a heroin addiction, to find out that besides heroin, they also no longer need cigarettes or sugar."

Bancopuma describes his flood dose aftereffects:

"My 'afterglow' peaked around a month after my initiation! A subtle yet tangible lowering of anxieties, and an increase in positive feelings. Since my initiation this time last year, I have not been affected by negative or depressive feelings in the same way."

"Iboga seems to bestow the gift of hope more than any other shamanic plant."

Health Concerns (Paraphrased with Key Quotes)

Explicit Warnings from Posters

Jorkest issues repeated cautions:

"it can be dangerous to mix harmala alkaloids with iboga alkaloids..but since this is such a low dose of both..i feel its relatively safe FOR ME...i cant really recommend this combo because it could be dangerous for YOU"

He speculates on mechanism: Iboga "sorta acts as a SSRI..combining high doses with harmalas could cause some problems...like combining kanna and caapi"

He notes that reports of high-dose combinations were "unpleasant for most people that tried it..but nobody was injured in anyway."

He recommends having activated charcoal on hand and trusting body signals: "if its saying..oh SHIT this is too much then stop"

rOm notes the general concern:

"Iboga is known to be unsafe when combined with some other substances."

Intensity at Higher Doses

Jorkest describes the 1g dose as unexpectedly intense:

"in a strange sense i sort of felt like i was dieing..but there was only the hint of nausea..but it felt like death"

"if i had taken more..i really would have liked somebody there with me..even at that small small dose"

"with the iboga..while that may still be true at higher doses..i also felt really alone"

He recommends supervision: "i highly recommend that if you want to take a larger dose..that you have somebody there that is familiar with it"

Stimulation/Sleep Issues

Acolon_5 notes:

"The stimulation IS problematic. Sleep is almost impossible, but melatonin seems to work where even benzo's/psuedo benzo's like ambien, don't"

rOm experienced "restlessness for a good 10 hours"

Post-Iboga Opiate Sensitivity

rOm mentions a serious indirect risk:

"We have heard of a few haphahardous accidents where the person after the iboga cure decided to take heroin again and did a deadly overdose. His body was made virgin from opiates and what was a very safe dose for him before the iboga rite, become a deadly one."

Unknown Territory

Prottel asks directly: "Why is it dangerous? I have heard it said, but may it just be a rumor?"

Jorkest admits uncertainty: "we just dont really know if there could be damage caused by it"

Polytrip notes dosing caution: "the dose would have to be as low as possible to be sure to stay on the safe side"

What's Notably Absent

  • No one mentions cardiac monitoring, ECGs, or QT prolongation
  • No one uses isolated HCl salts (all reports use raw bark, TA extracts, or caapi tea)
  • No one compares outcomes to clinical flood-dose addiction treatment
  • No one with medical or pharmacology credentials weighs in
  • No long-term follow-up beyond Jorkest's 2015 check-in confirming he's alive

The synergy reports are experientially rich but pharmacologically uncontrolled. The safety claims rest entirely on "I didn't notice problems" rather than objective measurement of the cardiac risks that make ibogaine dangerous.

Potentiation of Other Substances

Multiple posters observe iboga amplifying other psychoactives:

Polytrip makes broad claims:

"ibogain greatly amplifies the effects of almost all other psychotropics. And this probably cannot be atrributed solely to it's MAO-inhibiting effects. It also enhances the effects of substances that are unnafected by MAOI."

"according to user reports i've read, that is exactly what ibogain is capable of" [referring to amplifying cannabis "more than twice it's potency"]

Jorkest confirms cannabis potentiation:

"ive smoked some weed and the iboga greatly increases the effects..its actually very nice..smoking little tiny bits and getting sometimes more than i want or expect"

"when i smoke weed..i usually get way way way more powerful effects than i usually do"

Bancopuma reports potentiation of mushrooms:

"I did find that 500mg of root bark with a little alcohol and 6 liberty cap mushrooms produced surprisingly powerful results considering the very small quantities of everything ingested."

"Low doses of Iboga also boost the effects of marijuana to a noticeable degree."

Infinite I describes mescaline potentiation:

"I did however take 10g of peruvian torch yesterday and combined with the ibogaine in my system... the cactus was potentiated by quite a bit"

"felt as if I was calm mentally but stimulated at the same time, it was really nice and definately altered because of the iboga plus I needed less for more effects"

He notes the experience lasted much longer than usual (couldn't sleep until 4:30am vs typical 1-2am).
